Still redolent of Guinness and Joycean nostalgia, Ireland's fair city is also limbering up as a modern world capital with trendy new hotels and restaurants. Over 1,000 years old, Dublin is a city rich in history, offering its visitors a wealth of attractions including churches, historic buildings and museums. Discover the stately houses and elegant parks of Georgian Dublin or take a walk through Temple Bar, and find pubs, restaurants, shops and art galleries. With its down-to-earth and friendly atmosphere and welcoming and open-hearted people, it is no wonder this vibrant city is one of Europe's top destinations.
For some, the charm of Ireland lies in her countryside. Day trips from Dublin can be arranged with ease. A quick 'top o' the mornin' and you're off. Visit Waterford, the Boyne Valley, Wexford, or the Glendalough and the Vale of Avoca (home of the cult TV show Ballykissangel) in County Wicklow. We'll be making the two hour dash by rail to Belfast for the day. The country is small and the possibilities are endless.
This city of letters that gave us Joyce and Shaw, not to mention Wilde and Yeats, also boasts the world renown Abbey Theatre. Trinity College is the home of the Book of Kells. Written around the year 800 AD, it is one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world.
The Dublin dining experience has exploded to new levels. The renaissance is due in no small way to the wave of talented young chefs who are cooking with new levels of imagination and innovation. Chefs have put a new blas (Irish for gloss) on traditional ingredients. You'll still find the humble Irish spud (potato) featured in all sorts of ways, accompanying wild salmon and other seafood, tender lamb, beef and pork. You'll also find them in potato cakes and boxty, as well as in colcannon, all traditional Irish dishes.
